HDD OR SSD, which should you go for when purchasing a computer
When purchasing a laptop or desktop computer, in addition to other requirements, you have to make the choice of HDD or SSD for your computer storage.
HDD denotes Hard Disk Drive while SSD refers to Solid State Drive.
There are key differences between Hard Disk Drive and Solid State Drives:
- Speed: SSDs are much faster than HDDs, offering faster boot times, file transfers, and application loads. SSD transfer speeds typically range from 200 MB/s to over 5000 MB/s, while HDD speeds are slower, around 80-160 MB/s or less, limited by spinning platters.
- Durability: SSDs have no moving parts, making them more durable and resistant to physical damage or shock. HDDs have mechanical moving parts, which are more prone to damage and wear.
- Power Consumption: SSDs consume less power and run cooler compared to HDDs, which have more power consumption due to moving parts.
- Noise: HDDs make audible noise because of spinning disks, while SSDs operate silently.
- Capacity and Cost: HDDs generally offer larger storage capacity at a lower cost per GB compared to SSDs. In essence, SSDs are more expensive, though prices are reducing.
- Use Cases: SSDs are ideal for high-speed applications, frequent read/write tasks, gaming, and laptops. HDDs are preferred for large volume storage, backups, and data archiving where speed is less critical.
